Hematite is an abundant mineral and the most major mineral in most iron deposits. It is an iron oxide with a steel appearance ranging in color from gray to iron black. Its name comes from a Greek word for blood, which is a reference to its color in powdered form. Men are often attracted to Hematite and in ancient times, it was considered to be invaluable to warriors who were often found rubbing their bodies with it before a great battle, believing that it would bring great courage and protection. Today men and women mix it with silver or gold or other semi-precious stones and wear it as exquisite jewelry.
One of Hematite’s many healing aspects is that of grounding, helping to create a balance between the physical and the spiritual. Hematite is known to be a very practical stone and has the ability to counteract the feeling of being ‘spaced out’ and confused. Rubbing it brings balance and relief for stress and tension. Associated with the Root Chakra and survival, it helps one see more practical concerns and helps one to move forward with appropriate action. It has also been used during court cases as a favorable aide to hearings involving lawsuits and petitions.
Hematite has been referred to as an ideal tool for manifesting ideas and concepts from the spiritual realms into reality in the physical realm. It can help one to determine fantasy from reality and helps to achieve the highest purpose. It is only through this dynamic of grounding enlightenment that we can channel the highest frequencies to be brought to the earth level. Hematite seems to help one see the silver lining in every dark cloud. It lends strength and courage when moving through adversity.
The iron content of hematite has a strong effect on the blood and most gemstone literature stresses its use in supporting the kidneys and blood-cleansing functions. It has often been used in healing for headaches, blood disorders, detoxification, and hysteria.
Recently, a process for reconstituting and magnetizing Hematite has been developed, and magnetic Hematite stones and beads have appeared in the market place. Magnetized Hematite has also been found useful for balancing energy and refreshing the mind and the auric field. In physical healing it has been used for sprains and tears in tissue, increasing the flow of blood to the area and helping to seal the energy field, allowing one to harness energy and direct it towards needed areas.
Hematite in any form encompasses the Yin and Yang creating a perfectly balanced energy. It has been used when serious study is required, as an aide to focused concentration. Hematite is also good for bookkeepers, dentists, doctors, and anyone in need of tension relief and good sound sleep.
Any way you look at it, Hematite is a very powerful stone. Consider adding Hematite in your next meditation mala or necklace and enjoy its many spiritual and healing properties!
