Whether it is loving a partner or loving a child, the heart’s capacity to love is infinite. In each of us, there may be stored emotions or memories that are blocking your way to greater love. Through the practice of Kundalini Yoga, we are able to clear the crystal of our heart to experience life more fully.
For me, nothing has expanded my heart more than giving birth on January 11th, 2019, and caring for my Son, Julian. When I gave birth naturally in our home, I experienced a deep appreciation for the choices I’d made leading up to that day.
Through my spiritual practice and lifestyle choices, I learned to love myself, surround myself with love and be present with the moment. Each of these teachings came from a foundation of spirituality. As my Kundalini practice transformed over the course of my pregnancy, so did this growing space within myself to give and receive love to this precious child of the Universe.
Following are three ways to open yourself up to this expansive love. Whether you are a mother to a child or a mother to your own inner child, these are pathways to cultivate a love that will reach beyond your own heart to the hearts of others.
Loving yourself is a practice that can be approached differently, depending on where you are in life. When I became a new mother, it took a whole nine months of meditation and reflection to let go of the person I thought I was to make room for the responsibility of being a mother.
Through a daily Kundalini practice, which at times consisted of the Adi Shakti mantra, I was able to approach self-love with an inward gaze and embody the divine feminine. I’m not perfect, but I showed up each day to do something that brought me love and compassion. Through this, I am able to give my son the love that he needs and to receive the boundless love he gives.
Loving yourself starts with showing up. Once you’ve taken the step to show up for a daily practice, love will follow. This love manifests through your interactions, the foods you nourish yourself with, the gentleness of your inner voice, and many more ways. You are worthy of love. You are worthy of showing yourself this love. Listen to your heart and you’ll know exactly what works for you.
Surrounding Yourself with Love
On the 120th day of my pregnancy, I got together with the beautiful Kundalini community for a baby blessing ceremony. Since Julian is my first child, this was the first time I had experienced the power of receiving blessings for a soul entering the world. I felt encapsulated with love emanating from the people surrounding me. I fully received this energy with an open heart.
During my pregnancy and when he was born, we had generous help from close friends and family. I found that the more receptive I was to the free meals, encouraging words, and generous gifts, the more gratitude my heart felt. .
Love surrounds you in the form of people. Also, it can be revealed in the form of the simplicities in life that are all around you. Our home environment is intentionally filled with photos, scents, smells and sounds that envelope our body, mind and spirit with love. Incorporate love into your day with a simple touch of incense or a delicate touch from self-massage.
Beyond your senses is the understanding that you are made from infinite love. When you nurture yourself in various ways, your heart extends to all your actions.
In the age we live in, the phone can take you away from your inner voice of truth and into an illusion of social media or irrelevant data that clouds the mind. When you choose to distract yourself from how you’re feeling with a screen, your body and mind react with stress, worry or anxiousness. On the other hand, being present and content with the here and now is a transparent way to love.
“Love is a total state of mind of tolerance. Total tolerance is love.”
As a new Mom, in the spaces of silence while breastfeeding or watching my newborn son sleep, I’m given the opportunity to tune in to the prana, the life force, of my breath and to feel at peace. This anchor connects me to the present moment instead of worrying about what is going to happen next. The breath connects me to tolerance, contentment, and ultimately, love.
To be present gives you the ability to listen deeply to your heart with acceptance. Instead of distracting yourself from being in the moment, give yourself permission to accept what is. From there, a space will open for you to awaken to the constant flow of love in your heart.
As I write this, my son sleeps peacefully at two weeks old. I am amazed at how much freedom has opened in my heart by caring for this gift of life. It is my hope that each one of us can collectively come together to love, to serve and to remember that we come from the creative force in and around us. We are all connected through the web of our hearts.
“In love we honor. In love we grace people. In love we support. In love we sacrifice. In love we give. In love we elevate. In love we pray.”
